A brief update on the current Washington area PR employment scene based on the view from PRofessional Solutions, LLC, the Washington market’s only PR temporary staffing agency.
November ‘08: Slow (very!)
October ‘08: Slow
November ‘07: Fair
Ratings:
Bust - virtually no hiring for jobs, freelancers or temps
Slow - a few, mostly low-level, positions being filled; fewer jobs for freelancers or temps
Fair - existing jobs are being filled and moderate work for freelancers and temps
Strong - organizations are hiring at all levels and good work for freelancers and temps
Boom! - virtually everyone who wants work is finding it
Kate’s Overview: Washington’s communications community may be in a work limbo, but so far it isn’t shrinking and we have seen some hiring. This month, as last, applications to temp are coming from now-underutilized freelancers with only a few downsized professionals, but organizations continue to hold off spending their budgets. But I was heartened to see two fairly senior-level PRofessional Solutions’ temps who’ve been in the job market for months land good positions, so hiring is still going on.
Capital Buzz readers are always encouraged to share their interpretation of the current market. This month I’d love readers’ thoughts about whether the inauguration might spur an upturn through optimism or confidence in new leadership.

I believe things will turn around. In a Gallup Poll this month, 64% of Americans surveyed said they believed Obama's administration would create a strong economic recovery. Communications professionals and firms who respond to market demands will thrive.
